Every, other psychologist or mental health practitioner has been using the term Trauma Informed in their service description or while posting on different social media. The terms is being thrown around a lot. But, what exactly do we mean by being trauma informed?
Let's break it down. From the second we arrive in this world, life throws a mixed bag of experiences at us: ups, downs, laughs, cries, and everything in between. These experiences shape who we are, how we see the world, and influence how we interact with others.
Think of each experience as a little building block 🧱 in the grand Lego set of life. So, one experience = 1 building block. Now picture a building 🏛️- it's made up of loads of bricks (building blocks), and each brick plays a part in creating the whole setup. That's the essence of the trauma informed approach. Some bricks are strong and sturdy, others are a little cracked, and a few might be causing the whole thing to wobble a bit. Trauma-informed approach is all about paying attention to each of these blocks, figuring out which ones are adding stability and which ones are causing some structural issues.

It's about getting down and dirty with each building block (experience) and figuring out how a particular brick impacts our building (current situation).
So, when we say that our approach is trauma informed we mean that we're like Sherlock Holmes 🕵🏼️, but for your life experiences. We're not just about the now; we're digging into your past adventures (with your permission) to understand how they've shaped your present situation.
And no, it’s not as intimidating as it sounds. Trauma-informed care is based on a few core principles that make the whole process safe, supportive, and collaborative. Here’s what they look like:
🦺 Safety: This is about creating a physical and emotional space where you feel comfortable being open and vulnerable. Think of it as the cozy mental health version of your favorite blanket or a cup of tea.
🤝 Trust and Transperance: No smoke and mirrors, just a clear understanding of what’s happening in each session and why.
🫂 Peer support and connection: It values the power of community, shared experiences, and support networks. It’s about building connections that foster growth.
💪 Empowerment: It empowers you to be an active part of your journey. We give you the tools, knowledge, and space to take charge of your well-being.
🤜🤛 Collaboration: This is a team effort. We work together to understand what works best for you and make decisions that align with your goals.
🌏 Cultural Humility and responsiveness: We recognise unique experiences and identity. A trauma-informed approach respects and adapts to your cultural background and personal values, ensuring you feel seen, heard, and respected.
In summary, It’s not about focusing on trauma alone, but rather about understanding how every experience has shaped who you are today. With these principles in mind, we’re here to support you, one building block at a time.
If this is something that you resonate with book a session with me today.
